Rudy Garrett: The Role of Food in Activism 🅴

Episode 025 Rudy Garrett EPISODE ART.jpg

“So many people are doing this work because their survival depends on it, and they are often putting off a lot of other vital things in their life to be a part of a movement—to donate time to organization, to start a campaign in their neighborhood. So when you provide a meal to them, you are saying, ‘I understand that you are sacrificing something to be here and I want to meet that sacrifice and make sure you have what you need to do this work.’”

“Voting is the first step to joining the larger movement in building the communities and world we want to see, and the way you do that is by making sure people can join that movement with you.”

“You show people you love them by making sure they have something to eat.”

Amy talks with Rudy Garrett, Co-Deputy Director of Chicago Votes, on connecting her passion for food with her profession in politics. Rudy also shares her perspective on engaging at tables with people you disagree, and the simple mind shift we can make when engaging volunteers to ensure they have what they need to do their work.
